Percentage change

Question 1

Increase £80 by 15%.

Show method

15% of 80 is 12. Add 12 to 80: £92.

Solving equations

Question 2

Solve 4x + 7 = 31.

Show method

Subtract 7 to get 4x = 24, then divide by 4: x = 6.

Fractions of an amount

Question 3

Find 3/5 of 45.

Show method

One fifth of 45 is 9. Three fifths is 3 × 9 = 27.

Pythagoras

Question 4

A right-angled triangle has shorter sides 6 cm and 8 cm. Find the hypotenuse.

Show method

6² + 8² = 36 + 64 = 100. √100 = 10 cm.

Ratio

Question 5

Share £42 in the ratio 2:5. What is the smaller share?

Show method

There are 7 parts. £42 ÷ 7 = £6 per part; 2 parts = £12.

Standard form

Question 6

Write 0.00056 in standard form.

Show method

Move the decimal four places right to make 5.6, so use 10⁻⁴.

Probability

Question 7

A fair six-sided die is rolled. What is the probability of rolling an even number?

There are three even results (2, 4, 6) from six possible results: 3/6 = 1/2.

Area of a circle

Question 8

Find the area of a circle with radius 3 cm. Give your answer in terms of π.

Show method

Area = πr² = π × 3² = 9π cm².
